Situated in one of the best areas of Ilfracombe, Lantern Apartment is located in an imposing Grade II listed Regency terrace opposite the lovely gardens of St James' Park which lead down to the enchanting harbour (an easy 5 minute stroll away). The main High Street with great individual shops, and Fore Street, famed for its superb selection of cafes, wine bars and restaurants, are also both a 5 minute walk from the apartment.
Lantern Apartment is popular with couples and families who are looking for a special seaside holiday here in beautiful North Devon. This is an ideal place to stay if you are looking for relaxation, or perhaps as a base for studying or writing a thesis, book or your next published novel! Beatrix Potter, Joan and Jackie Collins all holidayed as children in Hillsborough Terrace.
Devon is renowned for its sandy beaches, coves and rock pools, great water sports (surfing in particular) and a terrific selection of attractions for all ages and budgets - all on the doorstep or within easy reach. And the weather is exceptional! Ilfracombe has the 3rd warmest climate in the UK.
DIRECTIONS to Lantern Apartment:
Exit the M5 motorway at Junction 27 and take the A361 to Barnstaple. Stay on the A361 to Ilfracombe. On entering Ilfracombe from Mullacott Cross, go straight on at the first and second set of traffic lights, then straight along the main High Street. Bear right at the point where the road divides into Portland Street (Cravings Tapas/Wine Bar on the corner) which leads into Hillsborough Road. The sea should be on your left. After approximately 700 yards take the access road on the right into Hillsborough Terrace, parallel to and above above the main road. Lantern Apartment is Number 9 with your private parking space (with retractable post) immediately outside.

Ilfracombe is home to numerous unique annual festivals, many of which take place at the harbour and the Landmark Theatre (live shows and films) on the seafront. The Lantern Apartment's owner, Fiona says 'When my children were small, they affectionately nicknamed the theatre 'Madonna's Bra'! The spectacular Victorian Festival is held in June, over an entire week, when Ilfracombe is packed with authentic entertainment: many street parades, markets, spectacular firework displays, concerts, theatre shows, 'pirates', BBQs, the Mayor's garden party (complete with Queen Victoria!), workshops for adults and children - there is even a grand ball! The atmosphere is fabulous!'
The Tunnels Beaches: Near the Landmark Theatre are four hand carved tunnels leading to fabulous sheltered beaches (awarded Blue Flag and Quality Coast) and wonderful rock pools. There is an excellent shop, cafe, beach bar and play area.
Within 20 minutes drive of Ilfracombe are many superb sandy beaches. The cream of these are Croyde, voted England's best beach, Woolacombe, Hele Bay, Westward Ho!, Putsborough and Saunton Sands - the UK's best long boarding surfing beach. The North Devon coast boasts clean beaches, spectacular surfing, excellent surf schools and festivals, and is a children's paradise; they can safely amuse themselves for hours building sandcastles, paddling and exploring rock pools.
Ilfracombe harbour is the largest in North Devon and was once one of the busiest harbours in the world, frequented by sailors and pirates alike. Even Sir Frances Drake landed here. It is colourful and quaint with a small beach, aquarium, traditional fish & chips, pubs, cream tea cafes and restaurants, shops offering local produce and every seaside need, fishermen selling their latest catches and regular gig races. The Yacht Club is open to all and the artist, Damien Hirst, owns the Michelin Star restaurant 'The Quay', with a vibrant, informal atmosphere and terrific food. Regular pleasure cruises, fishing trips and seal and wildlife safaris are available and The MS Oldenberg will sail you to Lundy Island - a truly magical 'away from it all' place steeped in history with a medieval castle, spectacular scenery, diving and wildlife galore. In the summer months, there is also a special ferry running between Ilfracombe and Swansea.
Other notable popular annual events in Ilfracombe include The Pagan festival, The Bird Man and Rescue Day, The Beer Festival, Pirate Day and The Arts Festival, and, nearby, an amazing Viking festival in Croyde, Strawberry fair, street party and the Arlington Folk Festival in Combe Martin, Pot walloping at Westward Ho!, The Medieval fair in Berrynarbor, to name but a few! The range is extensive and varied.
